Denmark Trip - Part 4

After visiting Henning and Bodil, we went to visit Mette and Søren who live on the island of Møn--about 2 hours from Copenhagen. They just finished building their new house there--they had started moving in about three weeks earlier. We also saw Mathies, Kristen, L. and R. again, because L. was coming to stay with Mette and Søren for a few days.

We went to Møns Klint--the cliffs of Møn--and the kids looked for interesting stones and fossils. Waveboy found a piece of fossilized squid tentacle. We came back to the house, and the kids ran through the wheat field right next to Mette and Søren's yard. Often, the only way we knew where they were was by the unusual bending of the wheat.

The next morning was Waveboy's birthday, and he started off the day with a swim in the sea. At breakfast, Mette placed little wooden Danish flags around his plate--a Danish birthday custom. Mette gave him a glass fish she had made (she's a glassmaker.) Later, he made a dinosaur picture out of glass pieces, and Mette told him she would fire it for him. We also looked around at Søren's studio--he's a photographer and painter. Their studios are in part of the barn from the original farm, and the views are lovely.

Unfortunately, we don't have pictures from this part of the trip, because we used Waveboy's camera, which we appear to have lost. Not his fault.

From Mette and Søren's, we went directly to Legoland. Legoland was a big hit with both Waveboy and Waterboy.

Waveboy took the Legoland Driving Test. He drove carefully . . .

filled up the car with expensive Danish benzin [gas] . . .

and got the car washed at the Bilvask [Danish for "car wash"].

He drove well enough to pass the test and get his Legoland Driver's License.

One of the interesting things about this ride is that all of the children put a lego flag of their home country in the windshield of the car so that the people running the ride know what language to use when talking to the children. It was interesting listening to the attendent with the microphone give instructions and encouragement to the children in at least six different languages--things like "Good job car 14!", "Watch out for the stop sign, car 22!"

Denmark Trip - Part 3

After two nights at Mathies and Kristen's, we returned to Henning and Bodil's house for two nights. On Monday, July 24, we went to Roskilde to visit the Viking Ship Museum.

They have five recovered viking ships, including this one:

They also have a number of Viking-related activities. Waveboy enjoyed making a Viking shield:

He wanted to design his own rather than use one of the stencils, but he did write his name in Runes (the Viking alaphabet):

Waterboy enjoyed painting a picture:

Waveboy posed with his finished shield next to one of the Viking boat replicas:

After visiting the Viking Ship Museum, we went to the Lejre Experimental Centre--it's an open-air museum with different displays that allow visitors to try different types of activities that a person living at different times in the past might have had to do--like making clay pots or starting a fire without matches. Some families even come and live at the Centre for up to a week--living as Iron Age families or 19th century farmers--but we didn't get to see any of them.

Waveboy and Waterboy enjoyed trying to grind corn:

Denmark trip - Part 2

We spent two nights at Mathies and Kristen's house in Birkerød--a small town just north of Copenhagen. They have two girls, and even though the kids don't speak the same language, they had fun playing together,

picking cherries . . .

swimming at the beach . . .

baking bread over the fire . . .

and touring the Kastellet in Copenhagen . . .

Vikings in museums

This evening after dinner, Waveboy and Waterboy were playing in the back yard. Waterboy had a small garden spade, and he was running around holding it like a weapon and making fighting noises. We asked him if he was a Viking, and he said "Yes!"

Waveboy had a broom for a weapon, and immediately replied "And I fight Vikings, and I put them in museums!"

Guess he learned a few things in Denmark.

Our Trip to Denmark - Part 1

It will probably take a while to get all all the photos and descriptions uploaded, but here's a start.

We arrived in Denmark on Wednesday, July 19. Our First stop was Henning and Bodil's house in Tikob--a small town about 45 minutes north of Copenhagen.

The next day, we went to a party to celebrate Kristen's birthday. The kids had fun playing together--swimming in the kiddie pool, running around the yard, and riding cars and bikes.

On Friday, July 21, Henning to us to see Kronborg castle in Helsingor--it is supposed to be Hamlet's Castle.

Henning and Waveboy walked outside the castle:

Dada and Waterboy outside the castle:

We stopped for a snack on the way back to Henning's house:

. . . and explored the ruins of another castle:
